Gillian Townsley

St Hilda’s Collegiate School

Gillian is the Chaplain and Religious Education teacher at St Hilda’s. St Hilda’s has four graduate attributes which we are encouraging students to develop, one of which is “Explore Faith.” This happens through chapels, RE, school-wide service activities, and other initiatives. Chapel services are held once a week, with the students attending in their whanaungatanga groups, and often include creative activities related to the theme. Additional special services include Eucharists, Prefects’ Commissioning, St Hilda’s Day, Carol Service, and Leavers’ Service among others. All the students take RE as a compulsory subject, twice a week for half the year in Ys 7&8, once a week all year in Y9, and once a week for a third of the year in Ys 10-12. The Y13s have a two-day “RE Treat” at the start of the year and some take a Theology or Church History paper through Otago University. Gillian comes from a Primary School teaching and University lecturing background, as well as a Baptist Church ministry background.
